Qiuhong Valley Landscape Eco-Park in Xitun District, Taichung, is Taiwan's only sunken landscape park. Centred on a sunken lake, the park reflects the four seasons: spring greens, autumn reds and at night, lit-up waterside promenades make it a popular photo spot. With a circular lakeside path, sky-bridge walkways, a glass viewing deck and a wooden boardwalk, it's perfect for strolls, dates, photography and family activities. Admission is free, the park is open around the clock, and parking is nearby. The orange reflection at dusk is particularly charming, drawing couples and families looking to relax.

Zhongke Park in Daya District, Taichung, is a free public park well-known for its splash pads and large terrazzo slides. On summer weekends, the water play area opens with mist screens, tunnel fountains, volcano fountains and water cannons, plus a shaded sand pit and electric water gun rentals so both kids and grown-ups can cool off. The park also has a 22-metre super-long terrazzo slide split into three lanes to spread out the crowds, alongside a sand pit and rest area, making it perfect for family outdoor leisure and summer cooling.

Baxian Mountain National Forest Recreation Area in Guguan, Taichung, sits at about 2,366 metres above sea level and is a popular summer retreat. The park offers a tropical-style paddling pool, forest waterfall trails, bamboo paths and Shinto shrine ruins, plus diverse natural scenery ideal for relaxed family strolls or hikes with children. Visitors can splash in cool mountain spring water, breathe in phytoncides, and pair the trip with nearby Guguan Hot Springs for a one- or two-day getaway. Tickets cost from about NT$100 to a few hundred, facilities are well-maintained and the restrooms are clean; the area is reachable by car or bus.

Baxian Mountain National Forest Recreation Area near Guguan, Taichung, sits about 900 metres above sea level and is the most popular summer escape in central Taiwan. Inside the park, visitors find a tropical-style paddling pool, the cool mountain springs of the Shiwen and Jiabao streams, bamboo trails, waterfalls and Shinto shrine remains—a rich blend of nature and culture ideal for family outings, water play or peaceful walks. Tickets are friendly on the wallet (about NT$100 for adults on weekdays, just NT$10 for children under six), the site is reachable by car or bus, and it's roughly an hour's drive from the city centre.

Tangmadan Mountain in Taichung's Guguan area stands at about 1,305 metres, the lowest and most approachable of the 'Seven Peaks of Guguan'. The roughly 5.1-kilometre trail takes about six hours round trip, with two trailheads (Lileng and Songhe); the path is gentle and well shaded, suitable for family hikes. The standout feature is the series of butterfly-valley waterfalls along the way—after a summer climb you can soak your feet in the stream to cool down, offering a refreshing forest bath and waterfall views that make it a perfect summer escape.

Dadushan 270 Heights in Xitun District, Taichung, hides behind the Central Taiwan Science Park and is an accessible trail perfect for weekend family outings. The trailhead is near Metropolitan Park (reachable by bus 324) and the route runs mostly along wooden boardwalks with pavilions and public restrooms, great for relaxed strolls and views where city meets mountain. From the 270-metre summit you can see Taichung's skyline and the Dadu River valley, with the Acacia trees blooming yellow in summer set against green hills—an outstanding spot for photos and views. The whole route is about a kilometre, takes roughly 30 minutes, is free to access and makes for a wonderful nature escape on the edge of the city.
