The sound of a suitcase clicking shut at dawn

The sound of a suitcase clicking shut at dawn

We bet on who would forget their charger—a game we've played since college—and while no one failed that test, we managed to lose the map within ten minutes of leaving the lobby of Fu Rong Da Fan Dian. It felt like a victory for the chaos we always invite. The December wind in New Taipei hits you with the force of a wet towel, a sharp, biting cold that smells of damp concrete and makes you regret every thin layer you chose to wear.

The shrimp dumplings at Fu Yuan arrived in bamboo steamers, the skin so translucent it looked like frosted glass, revealing the pink curve of the shrimp beneath. It was a small, steaming architecture of flavor that made the winter chill outside feel irrelevant. We spent an hour arguing over the last piece of dim sum, the jasmine tea steam blurring our faces into soft, warm smudges.

"The pool is a freezer," someone yelled, and we actually believed them until one of us, in a fit of misplaced bravery, dove into the outdoor pool at Fu Rong Da Fan Dian. The scream that followed probably woke up half the city. We spent the next twenty minutes shivering in heavy terry-cloth robes, debating the physics of hypothermia while laughing at the sheer stupidity of our decision.

The family room had these two 200cm beds that were less like furniture and more like vast, white plains of cotton where we could collapse in any direction without hitting a wall. It was a space that encouraged a level of laziness that would be frowned upon in any other context, where the only goal was to see who could stay immobile the longest.

6 AM arrives with a light that is thin and slanted, cutting through the room in pale, dusty strips that seem to measure the silence. For a moment, the usual noise of the group stopped, and there was just the sound of the city waking up—a distant, metallic hum that felt worlds away from our little sanctuary.

The sheets in the stylish suite had a crisp, heavy weight, a friction that held us down when we didn't want to face the world. The walk from the bed to the bathroom felt like a trek across a frozen tundra, the thick carpet swallowing our footsteps and making the room feel like a private universe of soft edges and muted colors.

We wandered toward Shenkeng Old Street, thinking we were adventurers, but we mostly just got lost looking for a specific snack, walking in a perfect circle for forty minutes. The realization that we were back where we started didn't feel like a failure, but a reason to stop and touch the rough, weathered texture of the old walls under the winter sun.

I sometimes think home is not the address on the booking confirmation, but the way we roast each other over a shared plate of food. The stillness is not the absence of noise, but the presence of the right people—a portable belonging that we carry in our laughter and our shared mistakes.

A single, steaming cup of tea on a wooden nightstand.

  • Get the dim sum at Fu Yuan; it's the only way to survive the cold.
  • Bring a real coat, because the New Taipei wind is not playing around.
